About Me

How I started.

I first began cake making for my son's second birthday. That was 1993! It was a very crude Thomas the Tank cake (no picture exists to this day). It became a tradition and each year cakes became more intricate or challenging. I then started Christmas cakes and since then I have ventured into cakes for retirment do's and celebrations for others. I tended not to charge a great deal; just enough for the ingredients and cooking expenses and very little to cover the time I spent mixing, making, icing and decorating them. I didn't like to charge friends too much despite the pressure to do a really good job because they were friends. Very early on I attended evening classes in sugar flowers (roses and carnations) and then having learnt the basics, I developed my skills through trial and error (you can at least eat the evidence of any disasters). 2009 saw my first wedding cake for my niece and that prompted two further requests for wedding cakes in the same year. My Grandfather was a baker and had a bakery in Tonbridge way back when deliveries were made by horse and cart; and one of my uncles also went into the wedding cake business. He is a true craftsmen; sticking with traditional royal icing methods and piping detail. Something that is very hard to master. So maybe it's in the genes. However, trends change and many people now favour fondant icing which can present its own difficulties if you're looking for the perfect finish. I've also ventured into modelling figures which again is somewhat challenging and many turn out OK with the not so good being eaten almost before they began. So that's me!

History of site

I have had many people ask me to make cakes for various occasions and as a result I started to build up a small portfolio. However, whilst lending this portfolio out to prospective 'clients' it meant that no-one else could view them, even if just out of interest, so I decided that as most people have access to the internet I would create a modest website so that anyone could see them at any time. As time goes by this site, I hope, will grow. And although not vast, I can also relay my experiences, both good and bad, for other cake makers and decorators to view.
